Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college/university required and an advanced degree preferred. Certified specialist in Planned Giving Designation is ideal. 

The Chief Development Officer will have 10-15 years of related experience preferably in a nonprofit setting of comparable complexity. S/he will have at least 10 years’ experience in the practice and management of client acquisition and experience with and responsibility for wealth management and philanthropic products.

The Chief Development Officer will ensure that the organization’s corporate culture, systems and procedures support the fund development and will lead staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the organization. An emotionally-engaged leader, they will have a national network and be able to open doors on behalf of HSF and the students and families they serve.

Position Summary:

Founded in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) provides scholarships and related support services to Latino students. With over 60,000 alumni nationwide, HSF seeks to give students all the tools they need to plan, prepare, and pay for college, excel in their coursework, graduate, enter a profession, help lead our nation going forward, and mentor the generations to come. Notable alumni include Alberto Gonzales, former United States Attorney General; Rosie Rios, Treasurer of the United States; Anthony Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union; and Golden Globe winning actress Gina Rodriquez.

As the nation’s largest nonprofit organization supporting Hispanic American higher education, HSF has awarded over $470 million in scholarships and provides a range of ancillary programs for students, HSF Scholars, and their parents. HSF further strives to make college education a top priority for every Latino family across the nation, mobilizing local communities to proactively advance that goal – each individual, over a lifetime, in every way he or she can.

Reporting directly to HSF's President & CEO, Fidel Vargas, the Chief Development Officer of HSF will build and lead the organization’s development strategy, including individual giving, corporate development, foundation and grants, and workplace and small business giving. As a prominent leader and member of HSF’s Executive Team, s/he will foster a culture of philanthropy within the organization and externally position it prominently, ensuring donors view as a major force for changing lives in the United States.

Additionally, the Chief Development Officer will be responsible for the planning and implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization, including a $250 million capital campaign launching in 2015 and a strategic plan to increase fundraising goals to $100M annually.

The Chief Development Officer is ultimately accountable for the oversight of all new fund development, securing gifts for the organization to increase endowment and maintaining excellent donor relations. This position provides strategic direction, ensuring that department staff has clearly defined goals designed to advance and support the organization’s strategic objectives, and will maintain accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
